Cambodia Casinos

[ English ]

There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den wagering is against the law. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a prime spot, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is real of most borders.

The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau gambling hall, highlights 150 slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel compound that highlights many conveniences in addition to the gambling den, which houses 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 tables.
