There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling den wagering is not legal. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect destination, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; still, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are apparently needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is real of many borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship casino, contains 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel compound that highlights numerous luxuries aside from the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
