There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from next door Thailand, where casino wagering is not legal. Eight casinos are anchored in a generally tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent destination, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and although visas are supposedly required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many borders.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, highlights 150 slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the common tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel building that contains numerous luxuries in addition to the gambling den, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
